The Devil's Circus

Benjamin Christensen, 1926, 74 min
Innocent Mary has barely arrived in the big city when she falls prey to the looming dangers of the city. First, she ends up in the home of a common thief. Then she gets a job in a circus and is caught in a dangerous game between a womanising lion-tamer and his jealous wife. Everything seems completely grim as the Devil pulls the strings and throws the world into a devastating war. But might God also get involved and punish those who ought to be punished?

Having made films in Denmark and Sweden, Benjamin Christensen moved to the US to continue his career as a director. ‘The Devil’s Circus’ was his first American film for the company MGM.

The film has English intertitles and Danish subtitles.
