Mockery

Benjamin Christensen, 1927, 78 min
Civil war and famine are raging in Siberia. A backward, poor peasant encounters the noble Russian Tatjana and, under torture, saves her life. When Sergei later looks up Tatjana to reap the rewards of his heroic deed in the form of friendship, he’s left sorely disappointed. She’s in love with someone else and wants nothing to do with him. As the fighting escalates, a now morbidly jealous Sergei sees his chance – the revolution makes everyone equal and Tatjana can finally belong to him!

Lon Chaney, known for playing grotesque roles and deviant characters, takes the lead role of the crippled farmer Sergei in ‘Mockery’. The film was made by Benjamin Christensen, who for a number of years made films in the US after a career in Denmark, Sweden and Germany. This version has English subtitles and Danish subtitles.
