In the Eyes of the Law

Willy Grunwald, 1919, 81 min
The idealistic journalist Sonja Waler is making every effort to provide financial assistance for the young doctor Albert Holm’s new invention, which is predicted to be able to save thousands of lives. She comes into contact with a cynical loan shark who ends up falling victim to Sonja’s altruistic plan.

The role of Sonja Waler is played by Asta Nielsen, who's great sense of fashion clearly shows in her costumes. Asta Nielsen always handpicked and put together her character's outfits – often contrasting colours, symmetrical patterns and big hats. 'In the Eyes of the Law' was one of the many films she shot in Germany and it contains beautiful scenes from the busy streets of Berlin on the brink of the roaring twenties.
