Du skal ære -

Fritz Magnussen, 1918

MOST WANTED | The film shows Olaf Fønss in one of his – reportedly – best roles.

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
The ambitious clerk Frantz Gerner eagerly climbs the career ladder and manages to win both a distinguished position and the boss’s daughter, Ellinor. He does everything in his power to hide his poor origins and humble childhood home, and when his father turns out to be waiting at table at his wedding, he denies all knowledge of the old man, who falls to the ground and dies of heart failure.

Lægen

Fritz Magnussen, 1918

A ravaging epidemic is fast approaching the world city of Atlantica. In his laboratory, the famous doctor Harold Lister works like a maniac on a serum to counteract the deadly plague. His colleague and competitor Whistler labels Lister’s efforts as pure fantasies and even plants seeds of doubt in the mind of Lister’s fiancée, Julia, the daughter of a millionaire.

Dommens Dag

Fritz Magnussen, 1918

Michael von Straeten is an unscrupulous financier whose harshness and cynicism have earned him the nickname ‘The Tiger’. He destroys his enemies with no mercy and no regrets, watching calmly when his victims come close to starving to death. Will von Straeten see the error of his ways when he is brought face to face with all the evil deeds of his life? Or is it too late for von Straeten to make amends for the lives he has ruined, escaping the ultimate punishment on Judgement Day?

No English subtitles available.

Præsten fra Havet

Fritz Magnussen, 1918

There’s an uproar in the small fishing village, as the greedy businessman Consul Warming forces the fishermen to work both day and night. The kind-hearted Pastor Strøm defends the men, but he’s immediately suspended and eventually goes to the dogs. When a violent storm puts both the consul and his daughter – Strøm’s beloved – into danger, the vicar from the sea defies both his position and the forces of nature to save them.

Fangen fra Erie Country Tugthus

Fritz Magnussen, 1918

Colleagues Maurice and Charles are connected through a close friendship, as Maurice is engaged to Charles’ daughter Vera. Everything seems blissful, but Charles is hiding a terrible secret that he had gambled on the stock market and covered his loss by drawing up bills to the tune of hundreds of thousands in his son-in-law’s name. When Maurice realises what happened, he chooses to spare Vera from finding out the truth and save her father.

Dømmer ikke

Fritz Magnussen, 1920

Marcus Bloomer, a district attorney, receives a divine revelation the night before he is to sentence a young man to death. The herald of the revelation takes the form of Bloomer’s former sweetheart Reine, who shows him the greatest mistake of his life: twenty years ago, Bloomer chose his career over Reine, who birthed a fatherless child. In a cruel twist of fate, the child that Bloomer abandoned turns out to be the very same young man he must now sentence to death.

Samvittighedskvaler

Olaf Fønss, 1920

MOST WANTED | The film is a Fønss extravaganza: it is written, directed and performed by Olaf Fønss. In fact, he is the only member of the cast.

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A young man who has enjoyed great financial prosperity during the war suddenly goes bankrupt and ends up on the brink of poverty.

Timeglasset

Fritz Magnussen, 1922

The lawyer Magnus Brygge has everything – a good job, two beautiful children and a young, beautiful student who has set her eyes on him. But soon his luck will begin to turn. A sleazy painter with nefarious ulterior motives first turns the head of the professor’s daughter and then of his young bride-to-be, with fatal outcomes and broken relationships as a result.

Munkens Fristelser

Fritz Magnussen, 1921

FRAGMENT |The beautiful Margrethe is engaged to the seminarian Bengt Darre, but oh, he’s such a bore. He’s a bit of a dreamer and very pious. She’s cheerful, happy and ready for wild adventures.

Skæbnesvangre Vildfarelser

Fritz Magnussen, 1918

MOST WANTED | The film is a graduation piece shot in 1918 upon completing a course at the first Danish film school. The cast includes teachers and students from the school. What did a graduation film look like in 1918? Were students required to demonstrate their mastery of specific cinematic techniques and devices? We are incredibly curious to see more!

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
The film is set around a bar known as ‘Røde Mølle’ (‘The Red Mill’/’Moulin Rouge’), where a passionate love drama has deadly consequences.

Gorki

Ubekendt, 1912

Hjalmar leads a double life; during the day, he is a clerk at his father’s bank while at night, he leads a notorious gang known as “Heldet” (Fortune). The purpose is to pay for his prodigious womanising and gambling. When “Heldet” knocks over his own bank, Hjalmar distracts the guard while the rest of the gang cleans out the vault, then he calls the police to allay any suspicion.

Hævnens Nat

Benjamin Christensen, 1916

On New Year's Eve, the convicted murderer, Strong John (‘Henry’ in the original Danish), escapes from prison and collects his son from the orphanage. When he breaks into a local manor to get some milk for his child, he is surprised by a young woman, Ann (‘Eva’ in the original Danish). Out of pity, she decides to help the stranger, but unfortunately some of the manor's other occupants wake up and call the police.
