Shanghai'et

Things are going well for the young ship’s mate Willy. He has just completed his exams with excellent results and, what is more, he has become engaged to his great love, Lilly, a shipowner’s daughter. Her scorned suitor, Mr Bang, a merchant, whose proposal to Lilly was rejected shortly before, is incandescent with rage and hatches a malicious plan to get his rival out of the way.

Their old maid Ane has been told by the bride’s mother to give her a cup of tea before she goes to bed. The bride and groom protest, grumble and cry, but Ane won’t stop until she has done as she has been ordered!

‘A Wedding Night’ is a film adaptation of ‘Et Lystspil i en Akt’ by Peter Nansen, which was first published in the magazine ‘Af Dagens Krønike’ in October 1889.

Peter Hansen, a parish clerk, is woken up in the middle of the night by a mysterious phone call. On the phone a woman screams for help, and when he hears shots shortly afterwards he knows that something is very wrong. He sets out to investigate the matter, and before he knows it he is embroiled in an actual murder mystery.

The celebrated comedy playwright Halfdan Berg has always been adored by the press, so he is shocked when his latest play is declared a resounding failure in the morning papers. To steady his nerves, he attends a party that evening, and here he meets Leonid Ivanoff, a tormented Russian artist who tells him about a demonic woman who haunts and hypnotises him. Before leaving the party, Ivanoff gives his keys to Berg, fearing he might ‘strike her down’ if he returns home and finds her there.

As they mature beyond the carefree days of childhood, their disparity in rank and status looms larger between them, and Søren puts aside his dreams of sharing the rest of his life with Polly. Instead, he meets a dancer, Stella, who moves with him when he himself is employed as a forest warden at Wrangelsborg, the count’s estate.

Colleagues Maurice and Charles are connected through a close friendship, as Maurice is engaged to Charles’ daughter Vera. Everything seems blissful, but Charles is hiding a terrible secret that he had gambled on the stock market and covered his loss by drawing up bills to the tune of hundreds of thousands in his son-in-law’s name. When Maurice realises what happened, he chooses to spare Vera from finding out the truth and save her father.
