Hjemmet reklamefilm

Robert Storm Petersen, 1920

This animated film is an advertisement for the Danish weekly magazine ‘Hjemmet’, which is still published today. ‘Hjemmet’, meaning ‘Home’, was originally called ‘Damernes Blad’ (‘The Ladies’ Magazine’) but changed its name in 1904, a few years after it was acquired by the publishing company Egmont. The advertisement was drawn by the much beloved Danish multi-talent Robert Storm Petersen, popularly known as Storm P.

Faustinus

Peter Elfelt, 1906

The short clip shows a spiritualist séance featuring a medium and two ‘spirits’, shot in Peter Elfelt’s studio. Dr Faustinus (1868–1946 – real name Faustinus Edelberg Pedersen), after whom the film is named, was an active figure within the field of spiritism and the occult.

The spiritualist movement, which had its breakthrough in Denmark around 1890, can be seen as a response to the void caused by the general erosion of religion.

Royal court photographer Peter Elfelt (1866-1931) was Denmark's first filmmaker. He made his first recording in early 1897, the one-minute reel 'Driving With Greenland Dogs', and the following ten years he documented every important national event as well as daily life in Denmark.

A young man unsuccessfully practices a variety of circus tricks at home. He then goes out on the town where his eagerness and clumsy excitement gets him in trouble more than once. In the end, the unfortunate clown manages to escape the most impossible situations after all.

'From Siberia to Moscow' (1876) was August Bournonville’s last long ballet. It was inspired by an 1874 trip to Russia, where Bournonville met Marius Petipa and saw several of his ballets. The music was composed by Carl Christian Møller.

Japhet and Tim have hired a ship bound for the Portuguese port city of Pontevidera, where Japhet hopes to find his father. His tireless search once again turns into an adventurous and dangerous journey. The two friends must fight both Portuguese criminal gangs and South American Indians, and when they finally return to London, Japhet is convicted of a murder he never committed.

The infant Japhet Newman is left on the steps of the orphanage. He grows up here and becomes a strong and cheerful lad who – together with his friend Tim – decides to go out into the world and find his father. The journey turns out to be unpredictable and full of adventures.

Two friends, Japhet and Tim, travel to London with the gypsy girl Fleta. There Japhet gains access to the bourgeoisie, where the gypsy queen Nattée had predicted he would find his father. Through a mysterious letter marked with the initials J.

Japhet is imprisoned and sentenced to death for a murder he never committed. Although he’s saved at the last minute, the hardships have taken their toll on him, and he’s broken in body and soul when they finally release him. Still, he gathers the strength to set out one last time to find his father.
