Hadda Padda

Guðmundur Kamban, 1924

Hrafnildur, also known as “Hadda Padda", and her sister Kristrun are spending the summer in scenic Breidabol with Hadda Padda’s fiancé, Ingolf. A pleasant time is had by all, until Kristrun and Ingolf can deny their love no longer and Ingolf breaks up with Hadda Padda. Deeply wounded, she plots her revenge.

Peter Hansen, a parish clerk, is woken up in the middle of the night by a mysterious phone call. On the phone a woman screams for help, and when he hears shots shortly afterwards he knows that something is very wrong. He sets out to investigate the matter, and before he knows it he is embroiled in an actual murder mystery.

Count Wrangel’s daughter Polly and the forest warden’s son Søren are best friends and quite inseparable. As they mature beyond the carefree days of childhood, their disparity in rank and status looms larger between them, and Søren puts aside his dreams of sharing the rest of his life with Polly. Instead, he meets a dancer, Stella, who moves with him when he himself is employed as a forest warden at Wrangelsborg, the count’s estate.

David Copperfield

After ten happy childhood years, the life of David Copperfield takes an obscure turn. His mother passes away and a cruel stepfather crushes young Copperfield’s dreams and sends him to work in London. From here, the poor soul must fend for himself.

In a boarding house where young girls are kept under strict surveillance, only two persons of the male persuasion are allowed to enter. The gardeners Pat and Patachon are popular among the girls because they can play the accordion and sing songs, both cheerful and sad. One of the girls has attracted Pat and Patachon’s particular admiration: Eve, who dreams of becoming an actress.

Else is madly in love with her botany teacher Petersen. He is courted by almost all of his students, but Else is the one to whom he ultimately proposes. Their engagement is announced on Else’s 18th birthday, much to the horror of her parents, who want a less common son-in-law.

Summer has arrived, and people are fleeing the sun-scorched, stony streets of the city. Pat and Patachon also leave the stifling streets behind to spend the summer in the countryside. Armed with a homemade camera, they hope to earn a living by taking photographs, though their efforts are not particularly successful.

Late one evening, Pat and Patachon are at a bar where they strike up a conversation with a young, mournful man. His name is Per Hammer, and the three quickly become firm friends. The next morning, the vagabonds’ temporary home – a moving van – is set in motion, and before they know it, they find themselves amidst the snow-clad mountains of Norway.

Old Lund is determined to make his granddaughter Lise/Liz a great dancer. He teaches dance classes in their attic home, accompanied by their neighbours, Pat and Patachon, playing the flute and violin. Joy fills the household when Lise secures an engagement at the Grand Theatre, but acquiring the expensive costumes she needs becomes a financial burden.

A cartoon version of HC Andersen’s famous fairy tale about the staunch tin soldier who falls in love with a dancing ballerina, sets out on an adventure, and is finally engulfed by the flames of love.

The film is full of funny scenes with living toys. It was both filmed and directed by Karl Wieghorst, who also produced several cartoons for Robert Storm Petersen, better known as Storm P.

Afgrunden

Magda, a piano teacher, meets Knud, a parson’s son, who invites her to spend the summer at his parents’ parsonage. When a travelling circus stops in the village, Magda leaves the meek Knud for the dashing circus rider Rudolf. But circus life with Rudolf quickly turns out to be anything but happy, and Magda comes to a tragic end.

Ballet dancer Camille dreams of becoming an actress. Her wish comes true when she meets the young screenwriter Jean. Soon, her career is well underway, and Camille’s name is on everyone's lips.
