Students Lind and Beck are on a hiking trip in North Zealand. They enjoy the summer sun, eat apples by the roadside and soon come across the idyllic estate Sølyst, where they fall in love with the estate owner’s two beautiful daughters. Else is madly in love with her botany teacher Petersen. He is courted by almost all of his students, but Else is the one to whom he ultimately proposes. Their engagement is announced on Else’s 18th birthday, much to the horror of her parents, who want a less common son-in-law.
