Elverhøj

Jørgen Lund, 1910

The first film adaptation of Heiberg’s classic play about a superstitious mother, Karen, the elf-maiden Agnete and King Christian IV.

Two infants are swapped at birth. Noble-born Elisabeth Munk is found on Elverhøjen (Elves’ Hill) and is brought up as Agnete, a peasant girl, whom all the locals believe to be an elf-maiden.

The anarchist lives a happy and peaceful life with his wife, until his mother-in-law suddenly pays an unwelcome visit. After a series of hardships he makes a drastic decision.

Having responded to a newspaper advertisement, a young girl sets out to take up a position as a housekeeper. Not long after arriving, it transpires that she has fallen into the clutches of the white slave trade. The house is in fact a brothel, and its lecherous clients are queuing up to get a piece of the new girl.

Master Spag rejoices when he is offered the position of house teacher for the baroness’ two sons. However, he is hardly inside the door before the naughty boys start running circles around him.

The film lacks intertitles.

Tryllesækken

Two clowns perform acrobatic routines with each other, but suddenly start fighting. One of them finds and hides inside a large canvas sack that turns out to have magic properties.

A young sailor dozes off in the grass in Frederiksberg Have and wakes up surrounded by supernatural fairylike creatures. They take him to the mermaid Capriciosa, who gives him a magic, inexhaustible wallet. The only rule he must abide is never to share his fortune with his family.

Jim, a robber, is in love with the chief’s bride Clara, who firmly rejects his many advances. In revenge, he snitches on the entire gang of robbers to the police, who immediately imprison the chief and his men. Clara kills the treacherous Jim and sets out to free her lover from prison.

Two men are big-game hunting in the jungle, where zebras, ostriches, hippos, monkeys and lions reside. When one of the big cats kills their horse, the real hunt begins.

FRAGMENT | Young Hansen is deeply in love with his boss’s daughter and regularly meets with her in secret. One day, the boss catches them and throws Hansen out on his ear. Hansen goes to the local bar to drown his sorrows.

FRAGMENT | The Princess of Illyria rejects all suitors, but suddenly begins to take an interest in a wandering pauper roaming the vicinity of the royal castle. It is none other than the Prince of Denmark and his friend, Kasper Røghat. By means of a magic toy, rattle and copper kettle, the disguised prince manages to secure himself a kiss and a night in the princess’s chamber.
