Director Cordt is in love with Wilda, the daughter of a councillor's widow. Much to his annoyance, Wilda casts longing glances at the actor Frits – played by Valdemar Psilander – instead. But Cordt has a plan: if Wilda is to lose interest in Frits, she must discover for herself his true nature as a carefree and financially irresponsible performer, and thereby realize that she is far better suited to Cordt. With considerable cunning, Cordt begins pulling the strings behind the scenes.
