A lazy sculptor squanders his advance and has to think outside the box to meet his deadline. At short notice, the sculptor has received the task of carving a copy of the famous statue “The Swimmer”. However, due to time pressure, one of the sculptor’s students has to replace the marble and become a living statue.

The fates of two people align as a beggar tries to steal money from a sleeping newspaper boy. Instead of reporting the crook to the police, the benevolent boy buys him a hearty meal, convinces him to give up drinking and helps him back onto the right path in life. Soon enough the beggar has a job, money and a roof over his head.

Brothers Robert and Hugo lead idyllic lives on a magnificent estate by the water. Their father, the old landowner, favours Robert, while Hugo is the apple of his mother’s eye. However, Hugo is not quite the goody two-shoes he appears to be: he has borrowed money from a crooked moneylender who is now threatening to contact his father.

If they are to perform the famous vampire dance, they must find a substitute in a hurry. An ad in the newspaper prompts a number of hopeful applicants to come to the theatre, and Sylvia is quick to make her decision: she chooses Oscar, a taciturn but handsome young man.
