The elderly Italian craftsman Guido and his granddaughter Mona run a plaster cast shop in a nordic city. Pat and Patachon serve as eager helpers, wholeheartedly dedicating themselves to the work. Among the shop’s customers is a young actor, Kaj Lynge, who spends all his money on plaster figurines just to visit Mona.

Summer has arrived, and people are fleeing the sun-scorched, stony streets of the city. Pat and Patachon also leave the stifling streets behind to spend the summer in the countryside. A love triangle is building up to a drama in and around the old mill. The wealthy and self-absorbed Per Persson is in love with the miller’s beautiful daughter, Grethe, whose heart, however, belongs to the miller’s apprentice. To Persson’s great frustration, Grethe would never dream of choosing wealth over love, so Persson instead – and unsuccessfully – tries to get rid of his rival in all sorts of nefarious ways.

Old Lund is determined to make his granddaughter Lise/Liz a great dancer. He teaches dance classes in their attic home, accompanied by their neighbours, Pat and Patachon, playing the flute and violin. Joy fills the household when Lise secures an engagement at the Grand Theatre, but acquiring the expensive costumes she needs becomes a financial burden.
