Fejl Etage

Ubekendt, 1916

Mr Vang, a clerk, has just moved into the fourth floor of a block of flats – and he has already gained a reputation as something of a troublemaker. The woman, a professor’s wife, who lives just below his flat has so far only been indirectly acquainted with him in the form of stomping feet and noise lasting into the small hours. She hopes to meet him face to face soon so that she can give him a thorough talking-to – and her wish is about to come true in a quite unexpected way.

Alice has long loved Otto, but a problem arises: a far wealthier and better-dressed rival also spots an opportunity to present herself as a good match. Alas! Poor Alice has neither the wealth nor the clothes to match such a suitress.

Anna, the daughter of an elderly farmer, and the farmhand Hans are in love and dream of a future together. However, Anna’s younger brother witnesses one of their secret meetings and tattles to their father, who immediately breaks up the rendezvous and dismisses Hans. The farmer has other plans: he intends to rid himself of debt by marrying Anna off to a wealthy local farmer.

Clara Rasmussen/Wieth/Pontoppidan (1883-1975) was to become one of the most famous actresses of Danish silent cinema; one of her most notable performances is in Dreyer’s 'Leaves from Satan’s Book' (1921), in which she plays Siri in the last of the four sections.

Royal court photographer Peter Elfelt (1866-1931) was Denmark's first filmmaker.

A Danish journeyman carpenter, Søren Hvid, and his friend Christian are travelling through Germany as part of their journeyman years, known as being ‘on the Walz’. They are accepted into the brotherhood of journeymen with the usual rituals prescribed for such events, meet fellow craftsmen on their travels and find work in a lumber yard. Their bindles, distinctive twisted canes and ‘travelling books’ remain with them all the way.

However, it doesn’t take long before the marital bliss crumbles and darkness descends on Eve’s life again.

Business partners Storch and Søndergaard are in for a very confusing day. The birthday child Storch reminds Søndergaard that it is his wedding day, which prompts Søndergaard to immediately send flowers home to his wife. In response, Mrs Søndergaard sends a lunch invitation to her husband as well as a birthday card to Storch.

The pharmacist Peter Pille and Colonel Sejrsberg's beautiful niece, Inger, are in love. Unfortunately, the Colonel is against the idea of an engagement and generally detests men who court young girls. Peter Pille finds out that the Colonel's negative attitude is due to jealousy and envy, because he himself has never really had luck with the ladies.

A typo in the newspaper sends a frisky model to treat the ill professor Knolle and a strict nurse to the croquis-artist Klat. While the supple model is about to undress in front of the embarrassed professor, the dumbfounded nurse wonders if the groping croquis-artist is actually a psychiatric patient.

The film has German intertitles with Danish subtitles.
