19-year-old Melitta von Windheim is profoundly fascinated by the famous actor Ludvig Romay. That’s why she can hardly believe her own good fortune, as it turns out that her cousin Rudolf is an old friend of Romay and wants to introduce them. Romay and Melitta hit it off straight away, and before poor Rudolf can look twice, the woman he’s in love with is married off to someone else.

FRAGMENT | The film is loosely based on Alexandre Dumas’ play about the celebrated actor Kean, who moves effortlessly through all walks of life in 1830s London. One evening he’s in the company of counts and princes, and the next he’s enjoying the company of poor artists at the city’s pubs. A series of infatuations drive him into a complicated love drama.

The celebrated comedy playwright Halfdan Berg has always been adored by the press, so he is shocked when his latest play is declared a resounding failure in the morning papers. To steady his nerves, he attends a party that evening, and here he meets Leonid Ivanoff, a tormented Russian artist who tells him about a demonic woman who haunts and hypnotises him. Before leaving the party, Ivanoff gives his keys to Berg, fearing he might ‘strike her down’ if he returns home and finds her there.

A Danish journeyman carpenter, Søren Hvid, and his friend Christian are travelling through Germany as part of their journeyman years, known as being ‘on the Walz’. They are accepted into the brotherhood of journeymen with the usual rituals prescribed for such events, meet fellow craftsmen on their travels and find work in a lumber yard. Their bindles, distinctive twisted canes and ‘travelling books’ remain with them all the way.

Everybody wishes for the happiness just outside their reach, without regard to the cost. One day, a pair of magical galoshes appear in the big city, which have the power to grant the wishes of anyone who wears them. The galoshes find their way to many wearers from all walks of life, who all learn an important lesson about being content with what they have.
