A talentless artist with a greatly inflated ego, Carlo Morton, has enchanted the naïve Helga with tales from Italy. Yearning to see the world, Helga decides to run away from home, following her pompous friend to warmer climes. Morton suddenly has his hands full trying to hide his Italian mistress away.

Jørgen wants to propose to Marie as soon as he has been promoted and can offer her a proper home. Indeed, his future looks promising until his father, who is a bookkeeper in the town bank, tells Jørgen that he has embezzled and spent money from the bank. In order to uphold his father’s honour, Jørgen must raise the missing amount, and the only one he knows with that much ready money is his uncle, the canny merchant Ole Konge, whom his father detests.

The poor child Inger must endure trials of an almost biblical nature before her heart can be saved by true love. First, Inger is rejected by the love of her youth, Hans, who chooses a rich man’s daughter instead. Because of this, she gets thrown out into the street by her own mother but finds refuge with an acrobat in a travelling circus.

The celebrated and vain cellist Karél impresses the royal couple with his virtuoso playing. When the princess invites Karél to go driving with her the following day, he convinces himself that she’s in love with him. He woos her ardently and sends her all the flowers he has received at the theatre.

Laurent, a painter, observes the performance of the dancer Marguerite and immediately feels drawn to her beauty and being. He invites her to his studio and the two fall in love. Unfortunately, Marguerite is already married to Stelio, who soon finds out about the affair.

Motorcyklisten

Viggo Larsen, 1908

A young man, crazy about motorcycles, buys an Ellehammer and drives it out of the store at wild speed. During his unruly driving, he knocks over several people, all of whom set out to chase him.

This short film is a popular and time-typical example of the so-called “pursuit farce”, or “running farce”, as the genre was called by the film’s director Viggo Larsen.

Two men are big-game hunting in the jungle, where zebras, ostriches, hippos, monkeys and lions reside. When one of the big cats kills their horse, the real hunt begins.

FRAGMENT | Lejla, a frivolous dressage rider, rides around with suitors and dances with death. Count Claes turns a deaf ear to all the warnings about Lejla’s behaviour. Claes only has eyes for Lejla’s beauty, but is blind to her rejections.

A mysterious film! That was the succinct description in the original programme for ‘The Red Club’ in 1914. One day Baroness Sonja discovers that her boyfriend Prince Stanislaus is engaged to someone else. Red with rage, Sonja vows to seek revenge and joins the Red Club, a mysterious resistance movement for anyone, wanting to have the unpopular prince thrown out.

FRAGMENT | A young man finds employment as an apprentice in a grocery store. As he is short of money for his sick mother’s medicine and furthermore is eager to ask a charming girl out, he succumbs to temptation and steals from the till. Caught red-handed, he is sentenced to two years in a correctional institution.

Storstadens Hyæne

Knud Lumbye, 1912

Having grown up in poverty, the ambitious Nana is determined to break out of it. She becomes part of the Paris theatre scene and gets involved with several of the men who court her. However, Nana’s impoverished past catches up with her, and the story comes to a tragic end.
