Metode i Galskaben

Lau Lauritzen Sr., 1921

The Madsens and the Sørensens are eagerly awaiting a visit from their rich uncle Bims from America. As the ship docks, the two couples stand ready like drooling dogs about to chow down. However, the four are in for a sore disappointment: the gifts brought along by their uncle turn out to be very modest in scope.

Brændt a'

Lau Lauritzen Sr., 1919

Every night a common thief stalks the local girl’s school, and he may already have stolen one heart. The headmistress of the school calls upon her nephew, the mighty detective, Basse, to apprehend the thief. On his way, Basse bumps into young Miss Lise, who happens to study at the school.

Dyrekøbt Ære

William Augustinus, 1911

Doctor Thaw cheats on his wife, Rose, with her friend, Nina. One evening, while he’s out enjoying his secret happiness, Rose is murdered by a burglar, and he finds her limp and cold body in their marital bed the next morning. Out of respect for Nina, he refuses to say where he was at the time of the murder and ends up being charged with the murder of his wife.

Kærlighedens Almagt

A.W. Sandberg, 1919

Nina turns in a wanted criminal, Carl Weldon, to get the reward and save her ailing mother. But when Nina returns, her mother has already expired. Visiting his father in jail, Weldon’s son Victor learns that his father is innocent of the murder for which he has been convicted.

Præsidenten

Carl Th. Dreyer, 1919

By his father’s deathbed, the young Karl Victor von Sendlingen swears that he will never make the same mistake his father made in his youth: to marry a girl beneath his own station. The promise proves to have fatal consequences when Karl Victor falls in love with a young governess, whom he impregnates but refuses to marry as this would break his oath to his father. Many years later, he is a highly respected president of the court about to deal out judgment to a young woman who has killed her new-born child.

Hævnens Nat

Benjamin Christensen, 1916

On New Year's Eve, the convicted murderer, Strong John (‘Henry’ in the original Danish), escapes from prison and collects his son from the orphanage. When he breaks into a local manor to get some milk for his child, he is surprised by a young woman, Ann (‘Eva’ in the original Danish). Out of pity, she decides to help the stranger, but unfortunately some of the manor's other occupants wake up and call the police.

Klovnen

A.W. Sandberg, 1926

Joe, a circus clown, has a chance meeting with a famous French fashion designer. Enthralled by Joe’s artistic talent, he gets him a job in Paris. Joe quickly becomes the talk of the town, but as we know, wealth and happiness do not always go hand in hand, as opulent big-city living tragically seals the poor clown’s fate.
