Gaardmandsdatteren

Ubekendt, 1912

Anna, the daughter of an elderly farmer, and the farmhand Hans are in love and dream of a future together. However, Anna’s younger brother witnesses one of their secret meetings and tattles to their father, who immediately breaks up the rendezvous and dismisses Hans. The farmer has other plans: he intends to rid himself of debt by marrying Anna off to a wealthy local farmer.

Hovmod staar for Fald

Søren Nielsen, 1911

Joy abounds in the little workers’ home when the three daughters of the family all come home wearing an engagement ring. When the sons-in-law come to visit, one in particular stands out. The merchant Black is wealthy and wears fine clothes, but the labourer family is quite unimpressed by that.

Det hemmelighedsfulde X

Benjamin Christensen, 1914

Not long before marine officer van Hauen goes off to war and heavy-heartedly leaves his family, he coincidentally discovers that his wife has a secret liaison with the dubious Count Spinelli. What the van Hauens do not yet know, is that the sleazy Spinelli has a hidden agenda.

The film has English subtitles and music by Neil Brand.

Zigeuneren Raphael

Kay van der Aa Kühle, 1914

A baby’s christening turns into a nightmare when Baron and Baroness von Wilhjelm’s young son is kidnapped by travellers. Mother and son are reunited after 20 years apart, when the band of travellers sets up camp at the very same estate where the Baroness resides. Raphael, as he is now named, has become a handsome young man, whom women swoon over.

Lumpacivagabundus

Ubekendt, 1912

A carpenter’s apprentice, Spaan (‘Chip’), has been thrown out by his master for being romantically involved with his daughter, Ernestine. On the road, he meets the slender tailor’s apprentice Naal (‘Needle’) and the drunken shoemaker’s apprentice Syl (Awl), and the three form a warm friendship. One day, they are lucky to win a large sum of money in the lottery, after which they go their separate ways with the promise of meeting up again one year later.

Dødskysset

Ubekendt, 1915

Edgar Doran has lived all his life on his old, gloomy ancestral farm deep in the forest. On a visit to the big city, he meets – among an extravagant company of artists – the eccentric, beautiful Vera, who enchants him at first sight. Edgar’s strong feelings are reciprocated, the couple get married and move into his forest home together.

Den fjerde Dame

Eduard Schnedler-Sørensen, 1914

MOST WANTED | Based on the preserved information, the film might be a forgotten queer gem: a comedy in the vein of Tootsie featuring Arne Weel in women’s clothes.

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
For his regiment’s 50th anniversary, Colonel Meyerink’s plans include an equestrian quadrille performed by teams of ladies and gentlemen. When he needs a fourth lady to make up the women’s team, Lieutenant Wolff is quick to promise that his sister, Leoni, will take part – without, however, having asked her first.

Magasinets Datter

August Blom, Thorleif Lund, 1918

The way to a woman’s happiness is a job at the Magasin du Nord department store. Or at least it is if we’re to believe this short story about the country girl Grethe, who gets a job at the department store’s weaving mill and meets the man of her life. We follow the happy couple from their first meeting at a mannequin exhibition to them decorating their shared home.

Tre om Een

Lau Lauritzen Sr., 1915

Three suitors swarm the singer Adelaide, two of which own millions, while the last one owns naught but wit. Miss Adelaide is offered a lucrative tour in America, but her contract already binds her to Europe. Only a hypothetical husband could cancel the Europe tour.

Manden uden Fremtid

Holger-Madsen, 1916

While holidaying, the beautiful heiress Grace meets the love of her life. Percy Fancourt is a cowboy and hardly a suitable match for a millionaire’s daughter – at least not if you ask her father. Reluctantly, she returns home.

Da Svigermoder kom

Ubekendt, 1918

The newly married couple Clara and Georg are enjoying a quiet afternoon at home when a telegram arrives, announcing the imminent arrival of Clara’s mother. While Clara excitedly rushes off to go shopping, Georg takes a stiff drink to fortify himself for the impending meeting with his mother-in-law. He falls asleep in an armchair, and all his prejudices manifest in a strange dream.

Sønnen

August Blom, 1916

Attorney Krogh and his wife, Gerda, are distraught about their only son, Kai, a wastrel and ne’er-do-well with no aim or direction in life. Kai again asks his mother for money and Gerda cannot refuse, even selling her jewellery when her son falls deep into debt. Can Kai be steered away from the abyss that awaits him?
