Jokeren

Georg Jacoby, 1928

It is springtime, and people from near and far set out for Nice to attend the city’s annual carnival. However, a car accident becomes the catalyst of a complicated love story and a showdown between a fashionable con artist and a young bon vivant known as ‘The Joker’.

The film is a Danish-German co-production between Nordisk and Horwa-Goron-Film der Deutsch Nordischen Film-Union and was Nordisk's final big scale production before the company went bankrupt in 1928.

Valdemar Andersen, 1926

A Danish journeyman carpenter, Søren Hvid, and his friend Christian are travelling through Germany as part of their journeyman years, known as being ‘on the Walz’. They are accepted into the brotherhood of journeymen with the usual rituals prescribed for such events, meet fellow craftsmen on their travels and find work in a lumber yard. Their bindles, distinctive twisted canes and ‘travelling books’ remain with them all the way.

When Eve Vange regains her sight after a successful operation, she falls in love with her saviour – the young ophthalmologist Juel. Her fiancé Ernst, who is both her cousin and a teacher at the school for the blind, sets her free so she can marry the man she loves. However, it doesn’t take long before the marital bliss crumbles and darkness descends on Eve’s life again.

Students Lind and Beck are on a hiking trip in North Zealand. They enjoy the summer sun, eat apples by the roadside and soon come across the idyllic estate Sølyst, where they fall in love with the estate owner’s two beautiful daughters. Soon, however, dark clouds loom on the horizon: the simple-minded farmer they gave a shilling on the way is in fact an escaped criminal named Black Carl, and he has sinister plans.

The artistic cyclist Gaumont, his girlfriend Baptista, and their partner Rosa arrive in town with their travelling circus. Rosa is secretly in love with Gaumont, and to her great delight, she gets the opportunity to travel alone with him when Baptista gets injured and is bedridden. The two of them grow closer in secret, but the clown Pierre, who has set his sights on Baptista, gossips about the lovebirds for his own gain, thus igniting a fatal thirst for revenge in the betrayed.

Goethe’s Faust myth makes an appearance in this drama about a dispute between two scientists. When Doctor Voluntas discovers that his rival, the virtuous Doctor Felix, is about to overtake him in the preparation of a serum for cancer, he decides to lure the good doctor into corruption. An innocent woman, Margaret, is reeled in as a decoy and it works! Doctor Felix soon forgets both about his work and himself, while the devil stands ready to take possession of his soul.

He eventually gets out of prison, and he and his gang make plans to rob the City Bank. When the cunning gang kidnaps the bank manager and demands a ransom of DKK 50,000, the skilled detective Sylvester Jackson is brought on board.

During a garden party, Willy is summoned to an ill child’s bedside and leaves his fiancée Erna in the hands of his faithful friend Alfred. Out of sheer boredom, Erna tries to kiss Alfred, but the loyal friend rejects her.

Klør Dame

Ubekendt, 1918

‘Go to Bessie immediately; you will be safe there,’ reads the farewell letter that Sonja finds in her father’s home after it has been robbed. Prominent inventor Lucius Lindner has taken his own life to escape ‘The Black Ravens’, a gang of which he was once a member himself. He leaves Sonja the secret formula for his excelsior rays, an invention which the criminal gang is eager to get their hands on.
