The film is the first film adaptation of Steen Steensen Blicher’s short story about a real-life miscarriage of justice from the seventeenth century.

The God-fearing vicar Niels Quist lives with his beloved daughter Mette in the small Jutland town of Vejlby. The newly elected county bailiff and local magistrate, Erik Sørensen, is the lucky fellow who wins Mette’s heart, but their happiness is short-lived: One day, the vicar’s farmhand mysteriously disappears, and all signs suggest that the vicar is the killer.

On a magnificent estate on the coast of Scania live a landowner, his wife, their daughter and a temporary lodger, baron. The lord and lady of the house eagerly try to bring the baron into the family as their son-in-law, but neither the baron nor their daughter, Eva, seem particularly interested. Eva is a bit of a wildcat who spends her days roaming the countryside and play fighting with her male friends, while the baron yearns for the urban sophistication of the city life from which he came.

Pat and Patachon, who deals magazines in a small kiosk, get involved in the case by accident and ironically solves it by accident as well.

In a boarding house where young girls are kept under strict surveillance, only two persons of the male persuasion are allowed to enter. The gardeners Pat and Patachon are popular among the girls because they can play the accordion and sing songs, both cheerful and sad. One of the girls has attracted Pat and Patachon’s particular admiration: Eve, who dreams of becoming an actress.

Performed by Hans Beck (1861-1952), soloist and head of the royal ballet, and Valborg Guldbrandsen (later: Borchsenius), soloist (1872-1949). The scenes were performed in Elfelt’s studio, due to the lighting requirements, which then gave rise to a problem of lack of space.

Things are going well for the young ship’s mate Willy. He has just completed his exams with excellent results and, what is more, he has become engaged to his great love, Lilly, a shipowner’s daughter. Her scorned suitor, Mr Bang, a merchant, whose proposal to Lilly was rejected shortly before, is incandescent with rage and hatches a malicious plan to get his rival out of the way.

By his father’s deathbed, the young Karl Victor von Sendlingen swears that he will never make the same mistake his father made in his youth: to marry a girl beneath his own station. The promise proves to have fatal consequences when Karl Victor falls in love with a young governess, whom he impregnates but refuses to marry as this would break his oath to his father. Many years later, he is a highly respected president of the court about to deal out judgment to a young woman who has killed her new-born child.

The popular artist Frank Harvey has been offered a job in America. On the voyage across the Atlantic, Harvey catches sight of the captain’s beautiful daughter, and the two quickly become good friends. However, a fire breaks out in the ship’s hold, and while the crew struggles to put out the flames, Harvey has to keep the passengers calm with his very best performances, and pray for his and the lives of others.
