Solo from ’La sylphide’ (1836), ballet by August Bournonville. Performed by Ellen Price (1878-1968), soloist from 1903. Ellen Price’s dancing in Hans Beck’s ballet ‘The Little Mermaid’ (1909) was the inspiration for Edvard Eriksen’s statue of the same name (1911).

Or at least it is if we’re to believe this short story about the country girl Grethe, who gets a job at the department store’s weaving mill and meets the man of her life. We follow the happy couple from their first meeting at a mannequin exhibition to them decorating their shared home.

MOST WANTED | The film is also known as ‘The Skeleton Dance’ and ‘The Dance of Death’. The preserved still images do not reveal whether the film actually features a dancer lit up by X-rays to reveal the bones inside. How might one of Danish film’s most talented cinematographers of the time, George Schnéevoigt, have solved this technical challenge? Our curiosity is further piqued by the fact that he was also the director and screenwriter on this film, and we would love to see the result.

Mysterious, hookah-smoking Doctor Nicholson will stop at nothing to get his hands on the valuable “blue diamond.” A rich man’s daughter, a poor French count, a marriage of convenience, bomb threats and explosions, kidnapping and cocaine are just a few of the ingredients in Nicholson’s dogged struggle to obtain the precious diamond.

When he finally succeeds, he pays for it with his life – the professor’s assistant Jakobsen kills Bjørn to get hold of the valuable formula. The hunt then moves onto the professor’s daughter Rosa, who is the only one left who knows how to develop the serum.
