Blind Alarm

When his mother-in-law announces her arrival, Fabian gets busy running away. He crawls up through the chimney, much to the surprise of the chimney sweeper, and then continues his hasty and destructive journey through the city. He ends up having a whole entourage of aggrieved people home with him in the living room, where a new letter from the mother-in-law is awaiting him.

FRAGMENT | It’s the day of the barber’s baby’s christening, and the guests start arriving with their flowers and gifts, dropping them off while the barber is still trying to see to his last customer. As it’s taking a while, the wet-nurse is asked to take the baby on a short walk before the ceremony begins. She comes across a handsome young soldier, who she strikes up a conversation with.

Young engineer Jameson quickly demonstrates his worth at his new workplace. Chief engineer Hooper is more interested in drinking whisky and chasing women than in making accurate calculations for the construction plans. Jameson quickly corrects this sloppiness, and his enthusiasm impresses both the foreman’s daughter Kitty and the manager, who promotes Jameson to chief engineer.

Anna, a young girl from a poor but honest household, is offered an attractive position as a lady's companion in London. Her childhood friend is worried, but she goes anyway. To Anna's horror, the "distinguished house" turns out to be a brothel and her first customer soon awaits her.
