Just before bedtime, Christian overhears a conversation between his grandmother and shopkeeper Blache. While Blache stubbornly insists that wealth is the only true happiness, the grandmother believes that a bright mind is worth more than its weight in gold. Christian agrees with Blache, but at night – filled with anticipation before his forthcoming birthday – he dreams of something that makes him see the matter in quite a different light.

FRAGMENT | A young man finds himself at loggerheads with his friend after he has tried to kiss his wife and at the same time turns out to be a common thief. When they meet again several years later, the villain has become a member of the crime gang called The Black Domino. By a nefarious trick, the villain gains access to his old friends’ villa and pretends to reconcile with them, while his hooded, cloaked and masked cronies prepare to kidnap the man as soon as he steps out the door.

FRAGMENT | The Princess of Illyria rejects all suitors, but suddenly begins to take an interest in a wandering pauper roaming the vicinity of the royal castle. It is none other than the Prince of Denmark and his friend, Kasper Røghat. By means of a magic toy, rattle and copper kettle, the disguised prince manages to secure himself a kiss and a night in the princess’s chamber.

Hjalmar leads a double life; during the day, he is a clerk at his father’s bank while at night, he leads a notorious gang known as “Heldet” (Fortune). The purpose is to pay for his prodigious womanising and gambling. When “Heldet” knocks over his own bank, Hjalmar distracts the guard while the rest of the gang cleans out the vault, then he calls the police to allay any suspicion.

The artists at a popular variety show are in an uproar when dancer Sylvia Lafont’s dance partner Enric falls seriously ill. If they are to perform the famous vampire dance, they must find a substitute in a hurry. An ad in the newspaper prompts a number of hopeful applicants to come to the theatre, and Sylvia is quick to make her decision: she chooses Oscar, a taciturn but handsome young man.
